Ashbourne is one of those towns that immediately feels like you've stepped into a postcard. With its cobbled market square, handsome Georgian buildings, and tucked-away courtyards, it's full of charm without feeling stuck in time. Known as the southern gateway to the Peak District, it's popular with walkers, cyclists and anyone who enjoys a bit of heritage mixed with independent shops and good food. It's got a relaxed pace but still hums with life, especially on market days.
The town has been around since the Domesday Book, and it's grown steadily over the centuries as a market town, thanks to its strategic spot on old trade routes. In Georgian times, it thrived as a coaching stop between London and Manchester. You'll see that legacy in the fine houses and the sweeping streets. Ashbourne's also famously home to the annual Royal Shrovetide Football match – an all-town, no-rules game that's been played for centuries. The population sits somewhere around 8,000 these days, but it pulls in plenty of visitors from across the Midlands and beyond.
Ashbourne's packed with interesting places to explore. St Oswald's Church is a proper landmark with its soaring spire, and the streets are dotted with antique shops, independent cafés, and cosy pubs. The old railway line has been turned into the Tissington Trail, ideal for a family bike ride or a long walk out into the countryside. Just outside town you'll find Dovedale, one of the Peak District's most famous spots, known for its stepping stones and dramatic limestone scenery. For a bit of culture and grandeur, Kedleston Hall, a National Trust property, is nearby – a neoclassical stunner surrounded by parkland. There's also Sudbury Hall and the Museum of Childhood, and English Heritage's Ashby de la Zouch Castle isn't too far afield either.
Further into Derbyshire, the county's peppered with all sorts of gems. You've got Chatsworth House – probably the jewel in the crown – and places like Bakewell, Buxton, and Matlock, all with their own quirks and attractions. Whether it's wandering around a quiet village, hiking over a ridge, or browsing a local market, there's always something to stumble across. If you've got kids in tow, Gulliver's Kingdom in Matlock Bath is a good shout, and for grown-ups who like their history, the Derwent Valley Mills are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Getting to Ashbourne's fairly straightforward. While it doesn't have a train station anymore, nearby towns like Derby and Uttoxeter do, and from there it's a short bus ride or drive. The A52 and A515 run right by the town, making it well connected for drivers. If you're coming by air, East Midlands Airport is under an hour away, offering flights across the UK and Europe. Local bus services link Ashbourne with surrounding towns and villages, but if you're planning to explore the Peaks in depth, it's handy to have a car.
Derbyshire itself is a county full of contrasts – a real mix of gritstone edges, rolling farmland, industrial history and picture-postcard villages. It's got a solid sense of identity, a proper community feel, and a nice balance between town and country. The Peak District takes up a big chunk of it, but there's a lot more to the county if you're willing to take the back roads. From mills to mansions, it's got stories in every corner.
