Buxton is a lovely old spa town tucked into the heart of the Peak District, known for its fresh air, Georgian architecture and naturally flowing thermal spring water. With its blend of grand buildings, independent shops and green spaces, it's got a feel that's part Bath, part countryside retreat, but without the hustle. Set high in the hills, it's the highest market town in England, which gives it a slightly bracing but invigorating edge—ideal for walkers, culture lovers, and anyone looking for a proper mix of town and country.
The town has been known for its thermal springs since Roman times, though it really made a name for itself in the 18th and 19th centuries as a fashionable spa resort. The Duke of Devonshire had a big hand in shaping its elegant layout, commissioning buildings like The Crescent and the Devonshire Dome to rival those in Bath. Over the years, Buxton developed a reputation as a place to take the waters, walk in the hills, and enjoy genteel company. It still holds on to much of that charm. The population these days sits at around 22,000, and while it's not a bustling city, it's very much alive with festivals, arts and local pride.
There's plenty to see in Buxton itself. The Pavilion Gardens are a peaceful spot for a stroll, with formal gardens, a boating lake and tearooms. The Buxton Opera House is a gem of a venue, hosting plays, comedy, and the famous Buxton Festival each summer. The town also has its own museum and art gallery, while The Crescent—recently restored—is now home to a luxury hotel and spa. Nearby you've got Poole's Cavern, an impressive natural limestone cave system with woodland trails above. Venture just a little further and you'll find gems like Lyme Park, a grand National Trust estate with walks and views, and Peveril Castle, an English Heritage ruin perched high above Castleton with cracking views over the Hope Valley.
The rest of Derbyshire is full of adventure. There's Chatsworth House, stately and grand with lavish gardens and a brilliant farm shop. Matlock Bath has a slightly nostalgic seaside-in-the-hills vibe, complete with arcades, riverside walks and a cable car ride up to the Heights of Abraham. The Monsal Trail, ideal for cyclists and walkers, cuts through stunning limestone dales and old railway tunnels. Bakewell's always popular, whether you're after a tart or just a wander round the market. If you're after wide open views and craggy beauty, the gritstone edges near Baslow and Hathersage are perfect.
Getting to Buxton is straightforward enough, although you've got to enjoy a few winding roads. The town sits at the end of the A6 and has rail links to Manchester via a scenic branch line. For road connections, the Snake Pass and Cat and Fiddle routes are dramatic but can be a bit tricky in winter. If you're flying, Manchester Airport is under an hour away, making it easy to reach from further afield. Buses connect Buxton to the surrounding towns and villages, and the town centre itself is easy to explore on foot.
Derbyshire's the kind of county that doesn't shout about itself—it just quietly gets on with being beautiful, grounded and welcoming. It's got this unique balance of heritage and wilderness, where you can explore stately homes one day and wild moors the next. The towns are packed with character, and there's always something just around the corner to explore. From market towns to hidden valleys, it's a county full of stories, good walks and friendly faces.
