Matlock is one of those places that manages to feel both lively and laid-back at the same time. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Derwent Valley, it's a proper Derbyshire market town with Victorian charm and easy access to the stunning countryside of the Peak District. The River Derwent winds its way right through the centre, and with plenty of green spaces, independent shops, and classic stone buildings, it's got a character that draws in day-trippers and holidaymakers all year round.
Historically, Matlock grew from a small village into a bustling spa town during the 19th century, when the thermal springs attracted visitors in search of health and relaxation. The arrival of the railway helped it boom, and many of the fine buildings from that era still stand. Its industrial past links with the local quarrying and textile trades, and the town even played a part in developing hydropathy – water-based health treatments. These days, it's home to around 10,000 people, though that number swells with visitors during weekends and school holidays, especially when the weather's decent.
In town, there's loads to keep you busy. Hall Leys Park is a lovely spot for a stroll or a paddleboat on the lake, and there's a miniature railway for kids and grown-up kids alike. Matlock's shops are a mix of familiar names and quirky independents, and there's no shortage of cafés and pubs to duck into. Just down the road, Matlock Bath has a distinctly different vibe—almost seaside in feel—with fish and chips, amusements, and the famous Heights of Abraham cable cars offering stunning views from high above the valley. For National Trust fans, you've got places like Hardwick Hall and Eyam Hall nearby, while English Heritage's Bolsover Castle is a bit of a showstopper, full of drama and history. Cromford Mills, part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, is another must-see, giving you a glimpse into the birth of the modern factory system.
If you're heading further afield, Derbyshire really pulls out all the stops. You've got spa-town Buxton with its grand architecture and arts scene, Bakewell for a slice of the original tart, and the unmissable Chatsworth House—a proper stately home that feels like something out of a film set. The Peak District is all around you, offering trails, ridges, caves, and classic walking routes like the Monsal Trail and Dovedale stepping stones. Villages like Eyam, Tissington, and Hartington are lovely spots to while away an afternoon, and there's always something going on—be it a local agricultural show, food festival, or outdoor theatre in the park.
Matlock's easy enough to get to whether you're travelling by train or car. The town has its own railway station with regular connections to Derby and Nottingham, and from there you can change onto mainline services to cities like Sheffield, Birmingham or London. The A6 runs straight through Matlock, so it's pretty well linked by road too. East Midlands Airport is the nearest international gateway, around 45 minutes by car. Buses serve the local villages and tourist spots, although if you're planning to explore the peaks properly, having a car can make things a lot simpler.
Derbyshire as a whole is a county of contrast. In the north, you've got rugged hills and moorland, while the south eases into farmland and market towns. There's heritage at every turn, from stately homes to industrial relics, and plenty of charming towns that don't feel like they've had to change too much to stay relevant. It's the kind of place where locals have a lot of pride, and once you've spent a bit of time there, it's not hard to see why.
