Chatsworth House stands proud as one of Derbyshire's great landmarks, sitting in the Derwent Valley amid the hills and parkland of the Peak District. It has been home to the Cavendish family since the sixteenth century, and it remains the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire although it has been altered by successive generations, leaving a grand mixture of architecture, interiors and family history. The house itself contains an impressive collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture and decorative art, so there is plenty to nose around at apart from exploring the building itself.
The wider estate is a big part of the appeal of this place for visitors. The gardens at Chatsworth cover more than 100 acres, with fountains, formal areas, woodland, rock gardens and the famous Emperor Fountain. The surrounding park was designed by Capability Brown and gives the house its classic countryside setting. There is also a farmyard and adventure playground for families with children, along with shops and places for food and drink.
Chatsworth isn't a National Trust or English Heritage property; it is privately owned by the Chatsworth House Trust. The town of Bakewell is only a few miles away, while Haddon Hall, Eyam, the Monsal Trail and the Peak District villages mean that you could easily have a full day out in this area.
We hope that you found this Chatsworth House tourist map useful for your visit to this area of Derbyshire.
