West Hallam is a largish village that is located to the west of Ilkeston in Derbyshire, East Midlands. West Hallam has a roomy, sort of semi-rural feel, with old lanes and farmland mixed with housing. The parish has a population of around 4,800 residents, and its story goes back to medieval times, with St Wilfrid's Church among the clearest reminders of that older village. Agriculture dominated the local economy in West Hallam for generations before nearby coal mining and industry brought huge changes to this corner of Derbyshire. These days the A609 and local roads provide links to Derby, Ilkeston and the M1 motorway, while Ilkeston has the nearest railway station for those who prefer to take the train. The village has schools, pubs, shops, sports facilities and plenty of countryside nearby for walking and fresh air. National Trust-owned Kedleston Hall makes a good local excursion, with English Heritage's Bolsover Castle abit further north.
