Located in the Bolsover district of Derbyshire, Clowne is a town and civil parish with a population of about 8,000 people. Clowne has old roots but a noticeably modern feel, having expanded from a farming settlement into a busy Derbyshire community. Coal mining drove much of its growth during the 19th and 20th centuries, and the village's industrial past still forms a big part of its identity today. Nowadays there is a lively centre with a selection of shops, cafés, pubs, schools and healthcare services, while Clowne Linear Park provides local walking options. The A616 and nearby M1 motorway put Chesterfield, Worksop and Sheffield within easy reach by road, with rail services available from Creswell railway station or Whitwell train station. Creswell Crags brings prehistoric history surprisingly close to home, whilst Bolsover Castle (English Heritage) and Clumber Park (National Trust) offer two very different days out if you are looking for something extra to do.
