Killamarsh is a village and civil parish that sits in the north-eastern corner of Derbyshire, where the county almost runs into Sheffield, and it has a population of about 9,500. Coal mining transformed what had previously been a largely agricultural community, with the pits bringing rapid growth before their eventual closure changed the local economy once again. These days, the village has a good spread of shops, pubs, schools, healthcare and sports facilities, while the Rother Valley Country Park brings sailing, cycling and walking almost to the doorstep of local residents. Roads to Sheffield, Chesterfield and the M1 motorway keep Killamarsh well connected, while rail services are available at Sheffield, some eight miles distant. Renishaw Hall is close by, while English Heritage's Bolsover Castle and National Trust-owned Hardwick Hall are both just a short drive away.
