Somercotes is a village and civil parish that is located in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, near to its border with Nottinghamshire. Somercotes wears its industrial past quite openly, having grown from a small rural settlement into a busy village through coal mining, ironworking and textile manufacturing. Somercotes is home to around 6,000 people, and it now merges almost seamlessly with neighbouring Alfreton and Riddings, so shops, schools, pubs and healthcare are never far away. The A38 is situated just west of the village and the M1 motorway is close by too, so getting about by road is fairly easy. Alfreton train station provides rail services to Nottingham, Chesterfield and Sheffield. The countryside around Codnor and Swanwick offers an easy escape from the built-up areas of the village. National Trust days out that you could take include Hardwick Hall, while English Heritage's Bolsover Castle provides another impressive slice of Derbyshire history without having to drive too far.
