Hardwick Hall is one of Derbyshire's great Elizabethan landmarks, standing proudly on a ridge near Chesterfield (11 miles) and looking out across a broad sweep of Derbyshire countryside. Now looked after by the National Trust, the house is famous for its enormous windows, which were extravagant luxuries at the time when it was built. Inside the house, visitors will find grand rooms, tapestries, furniture, portraits and decorative plasterwork, whilst the initials ‘ES’ appear across the roofline leave little doubt about the personality who was behind this place. Gardens, woodland, parkland and walking routes means that there is plenty to do without spending the whole visit indoors.

The story of Hardwick is closely connected with Elizabeth Talbot, better known as Bess of Hardwick, one of the wealthiest and most influential women in Elizabethan England. Born nearby, Bess rose through four marriages to build an extraordinary fortune and commissioned the new Hardwick Hall during the 1590s. Architect Robert Smythson created a house that was remarkably bold for its time, with huge areas of glass and towering symmetrical façades. Just a stone's throw away stands Hardwick Old Hall, Bess's earlier home, which became partly ruinous after the new house took centre stage. The Old Hall is now in the care of English Heritage, creating an unusual chance to explore two generations of the same estate side by side.

Getting to Hardwick Hall is definately easiest by car. The estate sits close to the M1, with Junction 29 providing an easy route via the A617 and local roads around Heath and Doe Lea. Chesterfield railway station is the closest train station, with rail services connecting the town to Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham, London and numerous other destinations; getting to Hardwick from there generally means either catching a bus, calling a taxi, or pre-arranging a lift. Alfreton station is of course another possibility, especially if you are approaching from a southerly direction. East Midlands Airport is the nearest major airport, with Birmingham and Manchester providing alternatives for longer-distance travellers. Once you're in the area, having a car will make exploring rural Derbyshire alot easier.
