Bolsover is a market town and administrative centre that is located in the Bolsover district of Derbyshire, around 27 miles from the city of Derby. You can't really talk about Bolsover without its castle entering the picture. Perched above the town, the seventeenth-century Little Castle was built by the Cavendish family on the site of a medieval fortress, and is now cared for by English Heritage. Below it, Bolsover grew through coal mining and its related industries, leaving a town of around 12,000 people with a strong working-class character. The A632 and nearby M1 provide good road connections, with Chesterfield, which is also the nearest major rail hub. There's a vibrant town centre, plus schools, healthcare and leisure facilities, and also plenty of open countryside towards the eastern Peak District. National Trust options within driving distance include Hardwick Hall and Clumber Park, giving history fans plenty to get stuck into.
