New Mills is a town that is located in the High Peak district of Derbyshire. New Mills has one of Derbyshire's more dramatic settings, perched above the deep Torrs gorge where the Rivers Goyt and Sett meet. Around 10,000 people live in the town, which expanded rapidly through cotton, printing and other water-powered industries during the Industrial Revolution. The Millennium Walkway now threads through the gorge beside old mill remains, giving you a splendid view of that industrial landscape. Two railway stations, New Mills Central and New Mills Newtown, provide links to Manchester, Sheffield and Buxton, while the A6 passes nearby for road travellers. Independent shops, cafés and pubs fill the centre. Lyme, owned by the National Trust, is close by, with English Heritage's Peveril Castle further into the Peak District, and worth a peek (pardon the pun).
