Clay Cross is a town and civil parish that is located in the Nort-East Derbyshire district of the county. Clay Cross owes much of its existence to a railway tunnel. Whilst driving the North Midland Railway through Derbyshire in the 1830s, George Stephenson found coal and ironstone here, which helped to turn a tiny settlement into a bustling industrial town. A population of around 10,000 people now live in the area, where the old engineering story sits alongside modern housing, shops and services. The A61 runs through the town heading towards Chesterfield and Alfreton, with the M1 motorway nearby and rail connections available from Chesterfield railway station (about 6 miles away). Sharley Park provides sports and open space for residents, while Ogston Reservoir is a short trip away for wildlife and fishing. Hardwick Hall gives National Trust fans lots to explore, and Bolsover Castle run by English Heritage isn't much farther away if you fancy a trip there.
