Alfreton is a civil parish and town that is located in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire. Alfreton had been a trading place for many centuries, but coal, ironworking and later manufacturing really put the town on the map. With a population of about 8,000 people, Alfreton still has a traditional centre focused around the High Street and Market Street, backed up by supermarkets, cafés, pubs and useful local services. Transport is definately one of its strong suits, with the A38 passing nearby, and the M1 motorway just minutes away. Alfreton railway station has direct trains to Nottingham, Chesterfield and Sheffield. Alfreton Park gives the town's residents some fresh air and breathing room, while the surrounding countryside soon takes over once you get beyond the built-up streets. National Trust-run Hardwick Hall makes for an easy day trip, while English Heritage's Bolsover Castle offers another hefty dose of local history if that is what you are interested in.
