Sawley is a largish village and parish that is located in the Borough of Erewash in the south-east of Derbyshire. Water has always been part of Sawley's character, with the village tucked between the River Trent, River Derwent and a web of canals and waterways. Now closely linked with Long Eaton, it forms part of a larger urban area of around 40,000 people, although Sawley's old centre, All Saints' Church and riverside setting still give it an identity of its own. Sawley parish itself has a population of about 6,600 people. Long Eaton railway station sits nearby - so train travel is convenient, while the A50, M1 motorway and A52 make Nottingham, Derby and Leicester fairly easy road trips. Sawley Marina is a big local draw, alongside pubs, shops and local walking routes. Calke Abbey (National Trust) is within easy driving distance, while Ashby de la Zouch Castle (English Heritage) makes another good day trip if history is your thing.
