Eckington is a town and civil parish that is located in the north-east of Derbyshire, some seven miles to the north-east of Chesterfield. Right on Derbyshire's border with South Yorkshire, Eckington has the curious mix of an old market settlement and a place that was shaped heavily by coal and industry. Approximately 11,000 people live in the wider parish, with the medieval Church of St Peter and St Paul providing a reminder that its story started a long time before the coal pits arrived. Sheffield is only a few miles north, and can be reached via the A6135 or via local bus routes, while the nearby train stations at Dronfield and Chesterfield open up longer rail journeys for intrepid adventurers. Eckington has a range of supermarkets, independent shops, pubs, schools and leisure facilities. Renishaw Hall and Rother Valley Country Park are close by, with National Trust's Hardwick Hall and English Heritage's Bolsover Castle both good options for a day out if you're that way inclined.
