Grassmoor is a village in Derbyshire that lies about three miles to the south-east of Chesterfield, with open countryside on one side and the town's shops and services only a short run away on the other. The village expanded rapidly when coal mining took hold during the 19th century, turning a small rural settlement into a busy pit community; about 3,500 people live in Grassmoor today. Grassmoor Country Park, created from former colliery land, is now one of its biggest assets, offering paths, ponds and plenty of fresh air and breathing space. Roads through Hasland and the A617 connect with Chesterfield and the M1 motorway, while Chesterfield provides the nearest railway station for train travellers. Hardwick Hall is a nearby National Trust highlight that is worth a visit, and English Heritage's Bolsover Castle is another good trip.
