Wirksworth is a market town and civil parish that is located in the Derbyshire Dales district of the county. Wirksworth is one of those Derbyshire towns where narrow lanes, stone cottages and little independent shops sit naturally alongside reminders of a much older working past. Lead mining brought wealth to Wirksworth for centuries, and the town's history reaches back to Anglo-Saxon times, with St Mary's Church among its standout buildings. The population of Wirksworth is about 5,000. The B5035 connects Wirksworth with Matlock and the A6, while Cromford railway station is about 5 miles away and offers regular rail services for those who prefer this form of travel; the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway runs heritage trains from town itself. There's a lively market, cafés, pubs, galleries and walking country around the edges. The National Trust-owned Kedleston Hall is within driving distance, with English Heritage's Hardwick Old Hall another decent historical day trip.
