Melbourne is a market town and civil parish that is located in the South Derbyshire district about eight miles to the south of Derby. Melbourne has a real small-town centre consisting of stone buildings, independent shops and old streets, surrounded by farmland. Melbourne has a population of about 5,300 people, and its long story is easy to spot in the Norman-era St Michael and St Mary's Church, Melbourne Hall and the remains of the medieval Melbourne Castle. Roads lead to Derby, Ashby and the A50, with East Midlands Parkway the most useful nearby mainline railway station. Cafés, pubs, schools, sports facilities and Melbourne Pool keep the locals busy. While Calke Abbey, cared for by the National Trust, is just down the road, and English Heritage's Ashby de la Zouch Castle is just a few miles south.
