Bakewell is a busy little market town that sits beside the River Wye, surrounded by the limestone hills of the Peak District and known, naturally enough, for its famous pudding. Bakewell is in the Derbyshire Dales district and has a population of about 4,000 people, but the centre often feels livelier thanks to numerous visitors, markets and events that take place there. The Medieval All Saints Church overlooks streets that developed around an old crossing and trading centre, while the famous five-arched bridge dates from the medieval period. The A6 links Bakewell with Matlock and Buxton, with buses handling public transport since the railway closed. Independent shops, cafés and pubs pack the centre of Bakewell. For days out Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are close by, while National Trust-owned Longshaw and English Heritage's Peveril Castle also make worthwhile trips.
