Duffield is a town that is part of the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, and is located about five miles north of Derby. Duffield sits on the west bank of the River Derwent in the Derwent Valley, with wooded hills, handsome older houses and a busy town centre giving it plenty of character. Duffield has a population of about 5,000 people, and its medieval importance is still marked by the remains of Duffield Castle, once a powerful de Ferrers stronghold. The A6 cuts through the town, while Duffield railway station has trains to Derby, Matlock and onward connections. Shops, cafés, pubs, schools and sports facilities make it fairly self-contained, with riverside and countryside walks close by. National Trust-owned Kedleston Hall is only a short drive away, while Duffield Castle provides history right on the doorstep. Belper forms part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site if that is something that interests you.
