Gamesley is a hillside village that is located on the western edge of Glossop, looking towards the moors where Derbyshire meets Greater Manchester. Unlike many neighbouring settlements, it is fairly modern, developing mainly during the 1960s and 1970s as new housing was built on former farmland; today about 2,500 people live locally. The A626 passes nearby for Glossop, Marple and Manchester, while Dinting railway station provides regular rail services for those who prefer the train. Gamesley has schools, local shops, community facilities and sports grounds, with plenty of walking country to choose from around the nearby Melandra Castle and the Longdendale valley. Lyme, cared for by the National Trust, makes a good day out to the south-west, while English Heritage's Peveril Castle lies further into the Peak District, and is well worth the trip.
