Scarcliffe is a small, old-fashioned village that is located to the north-east of Bolsover in Derbyshire. Scarcliffe is surrounded by farmland and woodland with the limestone landscape of Creswell Crags not too far away. The wider parish, including nearby settlements, has a population of about 5,000 residents, although Scarcliffe itself is considerably smaller. Its medieval roots remain visible at St Leonard's Church, while farming and later coal mining provided work for generations of local people. The A616 and A632 give road links to Chesterfield, Mansfield and the M1 motorway, with Shirebrook the nearest useful railway station for those who prefer to travel by train. Village facilities are pretty limited, so Bolsover and Shirebrook fill the gaps. English Heritage's Bolsover Castle is close by and worth a visit, while National Trust-owned Hardwick Hall and Clumber Park are good options for day trips.
