Whitwell is a village that is located in the Bolsover District of Derbyshire, East Midlands. Whitwell sits in Derbyshire's north-eastern corner, quite close to the Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire borders, with limestone country and former mining land all around it. A population of about 4,000 people live in the parish, and the village has much older roots than its colliery past might suggest, not least around the medieval Church of St Lawrence. Coal mining later became central to local life in Whitwell, and left its mark long after the pits had closed. Whitwell has its own railway station, with trains towards Worksop and Nottingham, while the A619 and nearby M1 motorway handle road journeys quite adequately. Shops, pubs, schools and sports facilities serve the local community. Creswell Crags is close by - an enclosed limestone gorge, with English Heritage's Bolsover Castle and National Trust-owned Clumber Park both worth exploring.
