Beccles is a friendly little market town perched on the edge of the River Waveney in north Suffolk. It's got that relaxed pace you only find in towns near the Broads—easygoing, slightly quirky, and full of character. You'll find cobbled lanes, handsome Georgian buildings, a good mix of independent shops and riverside walks that seem to stretch for miles. It's close enough to the coast to feel the salty air, yet tucked inland just enough to escape the crowds.

Historically, Beccles was a thriving port, with its fortunes tied closely to the river. In medieval times it was known for its wool trade, and by the 18th and 19th centuries it had built up a reputation as a busy market town with strong links to boatbuilding and brewing. There are plenty of reminders of its past scattered through the architecture—particularly around St Michael's Church with its striking free-standing bell tower. The town's population sits around 10,000, and although it's grown steadily over the years, it still retains a close-knit, small-town feel.

There's loads to see and do around Beccles. The lido is a bit of a local gem—an outdoor heated pool that's perfect in summer and run by a dedicated group of volunteers. The river is a big draw, too, with boat hire, paddleboarding and scenic walks along the Waveney Valley. In town, you'll find independent cafés, art shops and local produce markets dotted between cosy pubs and tearooms. Just outside, English Heritage's Bungay Castle offers a peek into Norman history, and the National Trust's Horsey Windpump isn't too far away either, giving you a proper look at the Broads' industrial past. You can also hop on a boat and explore the quieter stretches of the Broads from nearby Geldeston.

In the wider Suffolk area, you're really spoilt for choice. Southwold is only about half an hour away and has the lot—beach huts, a quirky pier, and Adnams brewery. Then there's Aldeburgh and Thorpeness, perfect for a day out by the sea, or you can swing inland to Snape Maltings for music, galleries and a bite to eat by the river. Framlingham Castle is a must if you're into your Tudor history, and Sutton Hoo gives you that iconic link to Anglo-Saxon treasures and wide open views. The Suffolk coast and heathlands are scattered with hidden gems, and it's well worth taking the time to just meander through the lanes and see where you end up.

Beccles has its own train station, which connects to Lowestoft, Norwich and Ipswich, making travel fairly straightforward for a town of its size. Norwich is the nearest big city and just under 30 minutes away by train or car, offering links to London and further afield. If you're flying in, Norwich International Airport is the closest, around 45 minutes by car. The town sits on the A146, which runs between Lowestoft and Norwich, with decent bus services linking nearby villages. For cyclists and walkers, the surrounding countryside is criss-crossed with trails, and you're never far from the riverbanks or Broads paths.

Suffolk is one of those counties that doesn't try too hard to impress—it just quietly delivers. From winding estuaries to ancient castles, sleepy villages and vibrant coastal towns, there's a lot packed into this slice of East Anglia. It's got a strong identity built on agriculture, heritage and the arts, yet it doesn't feel stuck in the past. The food scene's grown in recent years, thanks to local produce and seaside influences, and the landscape always offers a new reason to get outside—whether that's through a forest, over a heath or out onto the water.
