Kessingland is a charming seaside village on the Suffolk coast, tucked just below Lowestoft and perched where the cliffs give way to open skies and sweeping beaches. It's the sort of place where you can really catch your breath. There's a long, unspoilt stretch of beach backed by sand dunes and grassy banks, ideal for quiet walks, fossil hunting, or simply sitting with a flask and letting the sea air do its thing. The village itself has a welcoming feel, a strong sense of community, and just enough buzz to keep things interesting without feeling hectic.

Kessingland has been around for centuries, once thriving as a fishing village and even earlier as a prehistoric settlement. In fact, the area has yielded some pretty remarkable archaeological finds, including mammoth remains and flint tools. In medieval times, it was a fairly significant coastal hub with two distinct parts—North Kessingland, closer to the coast, and South Kessingland further inland. Today, the two have more or less blended, and the village is home to around 4,500 people. While it's no longer dependent on the sea for its livelihood, there's still a coastal grit and independence that shapes local life.

There's plenty to see and do right on your doorstep in Kessingland. Africa Alive! is one of the area's biggest attractions—a safari-style wildlife park that draws families from far and wide. The beach itself is quiet and natural, with none of the fairground fuss you'll find in bigger resorts. There's a scattering of pubs, cafés and independent shops, plus a local museum and art studios that reflect the creative streak running through the village. Just up the road in Lowestoft, you'll find the Victorian South Pier, the quirky East Anglia Transport Museum, and several stretches of Blue Flag beaches. For history buffs, English Heritage's Bungay Castle and the ruins of Leiston Abbey are nearby, and if you fancy something from the National Trust, Sutton Hoo and Horsey Windpump both make for an easy day out.

Across Suffolk, there's a whole landscape to explore—big skies, hidden rivers and miles of footpaths through woods and fields. Southwold is a real favourite, with its pastel beach huts, old-school pier and Adnams brewery. Further down the coast you've got Aldeburgh, famous for music, art and fish and chips, and Thorpeness with its fairytale vibe. Inland, you can explore historic Framlingham Castle, the Anglo-Saxon burial site at Sutton Hoo, and the timber-framed villages of Lavenham and Kersey. RSPB Minsmere is a top spot for birdwatching, and the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB ties it all together with gorgeous trails and coastal views.

Getting to Kessingland is pretty straightforward if you don't mind being a little off the beaten track. The A12 runs just west of the village, connecting it to Lowestoft to the north and Ipswich further south. Buses run regularly to and from Lowestoft, where you'll also find the nearest railway station, offering links to Norwich and beyond. Norwich International Airport is the closest for flights, about 50 minutes away by car. Having a car definitely helps when exploring the area, but even without one, you can get around easily enough thanks to local buses and taxi services.

Suffolk has a rhythm all its own. It's a county of big skies, quiet lanes and gently rolling farmland, peppered with historic market towns, ancient woodlands and wide sandy beaches. There's a certain stillness about it, even in the busier spots. The coastlines feel untouched in places, while inland you'll find grand old houses, crooked cottages, and a proper food scene powered by farm shops and seaside catches. It's got a proud heritage but doesn't rest on it—there's always something new to discover, even if it's just a better way to enjoy a pint with a view.
