Bury is a proper northern town with a proud industrial past and a warm, no-nonsense character. Tucked away just north of Manchester, it's well known for its lively market, friendly faces and that unmistakable smell of fresh black pudding drifting through the streets. There's a buzz about the place, especially on market days, and while it's got plenty of modern shops, restaurants and bars, there's still a strong local feel wherever you go.
Bury's history stretches right back to medieval times, but it came into its own during the Industrial Revolution. Cotton mills popped up all over, powered by the nearby River Irwell, and the town quickly became one of Lancashire's textile strongholds. The railway brought trade and people in by the thousands, and Bury grew into a key part of the northern powerhouse. The legacy of this industrial past is still visible in the mills, canals and cobbled corners that give the place its character. Today, Bury's home to around 190,000 people across the wider borough, which includes places like Prestwich, Radcliffe, Whitefield, Tottington and Ramsbottom.
Bury's got plenty going on for a day out or a weekend wander. The famous Bury Market is a local institution—dozens of stalls, great banter and bargains you won't find anywhere else. For something a bit more reflective, there's Bury Art Museum and Sculpture Centre, or the Fusilier Museum, which offers a fascinating glimpse into military history. If you're after green space, head to Burrs Country Park, perfect for a walk along the river, and a good starting point for a ride on the East Lancashire Railway. A short drive away, the National Trust's Dunham Massey and nearby Lyme Park offer grand houses and sprawling gardens. For English Heritage lovers, Bury Castle ruins sit right in the heart of the town, and the atmospheric Radcliffe Tower isn't far either.
Across the Greater Manchester region, you've got loads of options. Manchester's cultural pull is always there—galleries, music, football and some of the best restaurants in the country. Salford Quays brings The Lowry and MediaCity into the mix, while Bolton, Rochdale and Oldham each have their own character and countryside escapes. Head to Altrincham for food, Stockport for vintage charm or Tameside for canal walks and hilltop views. Whether you're after city nights or Sunday strolls, it's all right on your doorstep.
Bury's well linked for getting around. It sits at the northern end of the Metrolink tram system, with regular services straight into Manchester. There are also bus routes to pretty much everywhere else in the borough, and the East Lancashire Railway connects Bury to heritage train stops up to Rawtenstall. If you're driving, you've got the M66 running nearby, joining up with the M60 and M62. Manchester Airport is the nearest for flights, about 40–45 minutes away by car or tram and train combo. Whether you're commuting, travelling or heading out on an adventure, it's all within easy reach.
Greater Manchester is a proper patchwork of towns, cities and countryside, all with their own story and style. It's a region that's built on graft and grit, but also full of creativity, resilience and big ideas. From the hills of Saddleworth to the canals of Wigan, and the theatres of Manchester to the moors of Bolton, it's a place that never stands still. Every corner has something to say, and there's a real sense of pride that binds the whole lot together.
