Wigan is a proper northern town, proud of its roots and packed with personality. Tucked between Manchester and Liverpool, it's a place where rugby league is practically a religion, pies are taken seriously, and people call a spade a spade. The town sits along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, surrounded by greenery yet close to city life. You'll find old mills, market stalls, grand buildings and modern shops all blended together, with that no-nonsense Wigan spirit running through the lot.
Wigan's history goes back over a thousand years. It was once a key Roman settlement and later developed as a market town, gaining borough status in the 13th century. But it was the Industrial Revolution that really shaped the town. Coal mining, cotton mills and engineering turned Wigan into a powerhouse of industry. At one point, the town had over a thousand pit shafts. George Orwell famously described Wigan in The Road to Wigan Pier, capturing both its harsh conditions and working-class resilience. These days, Wigan has a population of just over 100,000, with the wider borough home to around 320,000 people. It's a mix of the old and the new, gritty and green, and full of character.
Wigan has plenty to see and do. Wigan Pier may not be what it once was, but the surrounding area still has charm, especially along the canal where old warehouses and towpaths tell tales of industry. The Museum of Wigan Life offers a deep dive into the town's past, and Mesnes Park is a beautifully kept space right in the middle of it all. Haigh Woodland Park is just outside the centre, with walks, cafes, golf, high ropes and a craft village. For something grander, the National Trust's Rufford Old Hall isn't far away—full of Tudor charm and surrounded by gardens. English Heritage's nearby sites include Norton Priory and the remains of Bury Castle, both ideal for a bit of a wander and some history without the crowds.
In the wider Greater Manchester area, you're spoilt for choice. Manchester city centre is packed with museums, music venues, and places to eat. Salford Quays is full of culture at The Lowry and MediaCityUK. Bury's famous for its market and steam trains, and Stockport offers history, shopping and a growing food scene. Bolton's moors, Rochdale's canal walks, and Oldham's Saddleworth villages bring you greenery and heritage. Whether you want to catch a gig, stroll through a Victorian park or try something new to eat, it's all nearby and easy to reach.
Wigan's well connected for getting around. The town has two main stations—Wigan North Western and Wigan Wallgate—giving you rail links to Manchester, Liverpool, London and beyond. Roads are decent too, with the M6 and M61 both close, and the A49 running right through town. Local buses cover nearby villages and towns, and cycling routes along the canal towpaths are growing in popularity. Manchester Airport is the closest for flights, about 35–40 minutes away by car or reachable by train with a quick change at Manchester Piccadilly. You can also reach Liverpool John Lennon Airport within the hour.
Greater Manchester is a region built on industry, invention and identity. It's a place that's always evolving—city skylines grow, high streets change, but the community feel stays strong. Each borough adds something different: Wigan brings rugby, real ale and rolling countryside; Salford offers arts and ambition; Manchester delivers the buzz. Whether you're in the thick of it or on the edge, there's always something happening. From cobbled streets to canals, music scenes to moorland, Greater Manchester is full of stories, and Wigan's right in the middle of it all.
