Crosby is a chilled-out coastal town in north Merseyside with a strong sense of place and one of the most iconic beaches in the country. It's the kind of spot that locals love for its community feel and easy pace, while visitors are drawn in by the sea air, tidy high street and of course, those eerie iron men gazing out from the sand. It's not flashy, but it's definitely got style—a little seaside character, a splash of green space, and good links to the city when you want them.
The town's roots stretch back to Viking times, with the name Crosby coming from Old Norse—literally meaning “village with crosses.” It grew steadily as a series of small hamlets, eventually coming together as one township. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it became popular with Liverpool's professionals and shipping families looking for some fresh air and peace by the sea. Its growth followed the arrival of the railway and it remains a well-connected commuter town to this day. The population now sits around 50,000, spread across areas like Great Crosby, Blundellsands and Waterloo, each with their own little quirks.
Crosby's biggest draw is its beach—wide, windswept and home to Antony Gormley's ‘Another Place' installation, where a hundred cast-iron figures stand facing the Irish Sea. The beach stretches from Seaforth up to Hightown, with plenty of space for dog walkers, families and anyone who just fancies watching the tide roll in. There's also Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, ideal for paddleboarding or a quiet coffee by the water. Nearby, you've got Waterloo's Marine Gardens and Vale Park for a green breather. Not far away is Formby, run by the National Trust, with its dunes, pinewoods and red squirrel trails. English Heritage properties like St George's Hall and Speke Hall are easy to reach, making Crosby a great base for heritage-lovers too.
Across Merseyside, you're never short of options. Liverpool's a direct train ride away, full of museums, shops and nightlife. New Brighton's a quick drive for arcades, fish and chips and fairground rides. Southport's ideal for a slightly more traditional day out, while Knowsley Safari Park, the Wirral Peninsula and places like Port Sunlight offer culture, wildlife and walking all rolled into one. Whether it's seaside or city break you're after, you won't need to travel far.
Getting to Crosby is simple enough. Blundellsands & Crosby and Waterloo stations both sit on the Merseyrail Northern Line, linking straight to Liverpool Central in under 20 minutes. The A565 runs right through town and connects easily to the M57 and M58 if you're heading further afield. Buses run regularly to Bootle, Southport, Liverpool and Formby. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is about a 35-minute drive, while Manchester Airport's a bit further but still reachable for longer trips. Whether you're commuting, heading out for a day trip or coming in for a visit, it's all smooth sailing.
Merseyside is a county full of energy, contrast and character. From the industrial muscle of its past to the creative spark that still runs through its towns and cities today, it's a place where history and everyday life mix without fuss. There's coastline and countryside, football and ferry rides, art galleries and allotments. People look out for each other here, and there's something proper about its communities—each one a little different, but all part of the bigger Merseyside picture.
