Wallasey is a breezy, coastal town sitting at the north-eastern tip of the Wirral Peninsula, right where the River Mersey spills into the Irish Sea. With big skies, long beaches and proper northern character, it's got a mix of seaside charm and everyday community spirit. It's the kind of place where you can get your feet sandy one minute and be in a chippy queue the next, all within a stone's throw of Liverpool's iconic skyline across the water.

The town's roots go back centuries, once a collection of small villages and farmland before the docks and seaside resorts kicked things into gear in the 19th century. The arrival of the railway helped bring crowds to New Brighton, Wallasey's most famous coastal suburb, which soon filled with pleasure gardens, piers, theatres and even a tower that rivalled Blackpool's. Wallasey grew quickly and became a borough in its own right, eventually joining the wider Wirral council area. These days, the population sits around 85,000 and it still holds onto that mix of suburban calm and old-fashioned seaside appeal.

There's no shortage of things to see and do. New Brighton is still the jewel in the crown, with its wide promenade, beach, Marine Point retail and leisure complex, and the art deco Floral Pavilion theatre. The Black Pearl driftwood pirate ship down by the beach is a quirky local project that draws families and curious wanderers alike. Vale Park is perfect for a walk with a sea view, and the promenade is ideal for cycling or a slow afternoon stroll. Fort Perch Rock, just off the shore, adds a touch of military history, while National Trust fans will enjoy nearby places like Speke Hall or the red squirrel haven at Formby. English Heritage also manages sites in nearby Birkenhead and Liverpool, including St Mary's Tower and St George's Hall.

Across Merseyside there's loads to explore. Liverpool is just over the water—ten minutes by train or a ferry ride with a view—offering museums, cathedrals, galleries and a proper mix of shopping and nightlife. The Wirral's full of pretty villages like Port Sunlight and Heswall, while further afield you've got the beaches of West Kirby and Hoylake, Crosby's famous iron men sculptures, and leafy escapes like Sefton Park. Southport, Knowsley Safari Park and the rolling hills of the Cheshire border aren't far either, so there's always something within reach if you fancy a change of scene.

Wallasey's well connected. The Merseyrail line runs straight through with stops at Wallasey Village, Wallasey Grove Road and New Brighton, giving easy access to Liverpool, Chester and the rest of the Wirral. The Kingsway Tunnel takes cars directly into the heart of Liverpool, while buses run regularly across the peninsula. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is about 40 minutes away by car, with flights to most UK and European cities, and Manchester Airport isn't too far either. The A59, A41 and M53 give decent road access whether you're heading north, south or inland.

Merseyside is a county that's always had a strong sense of identity—urban, coastal, creative, proud and full of character. It's got gritty cities and elegant parks, shipping heritage and lively music scenes, golden beaches and hidden green spaces. From the echo of industry to the rhythm of street life, there's something layered and real about the place. People care about their communities, speak their minds and make you feel welcome. Whether you're after culture, coastline or a pint with proper chat, Merseyside's got it.
