Southport is a classic British seaside town with a touch of Victorian elegance, sitting comfortably on the northwest coast of Merseyside. It's known for its long sandy beaches, wide boulevards, and nostalgic charm. There's a laid-back feel to the place—deckchairs on the prom, fish and chips by the pier, and a breeze that carries the sound of seagulls and distant brass bands. It's the kind of town where families return year after year, and day-trippers come to stretch their legs, grab an ice cream and forget the world for a bit.
The town's roots go back to the turn of the 19th century when it started life as a small fishing village. As the popularity of seaside holidays grew, Southport boomed, especially during the Victorian era, with grand buildings, arcades and pleasure grounds springing up to cater to the fashionable crowd. The famous Lord Street, said to have inspired Parisian boulevards, became the town's elegant spine. Today, Southport has a population of just over 94,000 and still holds on to much of its heritage, mixing tradition with a growing arts and events scene.
There's plenty to do in town. The iconic Southport Pier is the second longest in the UK and perfect for a walk out to sea without getting your feet wet. King's Gardens and the Marine Lake offer paddle boats, playgrounds and leafy strolls. The Atkinson is the town's main arts hub with galleries, performances and local history exhibits. Further out, you'll find National Trust's Formby coastal reserve, home to red squirrels, woodlands and dramatic dunes. English Heritage looks after nearby Lydiate Hall ruins and the ancient site of Rufford Old Hall isn't far either. Hesketh Park, with its boating lake and floral displays, is another gem tucked just north of the centre.
Wider Merseyside has plenty to offer, and Southport's a great base to explore from. You can be in Liverpool in under an hour, with its museums, docks and buzzing culture. Crosby's beach, with Antony Gormley's haunting iron men, makes a great stop. Head further inland and you've got the walking trails and hidden gems of the Wirral, or head north to the Ribble Estuary for birdwatching and peace. Aintree for racing, Knowsley for the safari park, and St Helens for glass and rugby—everything's in reach if you're up for a bit of exploring.
Getting to Southport is straightforward. The train line links it directly to Liverpool via Merseyrail, and the journey is scenic and reliable. You can also reach Manchester via Wigan, with connections from Southport Station. For drivers, the A565 runs along the coast and links easily to the M58 and M6. Buses serve the surrounding towns and villages, and the local network's decent for getting around without a car. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is about an hour away, with Manchester Airport just a bit further if you're flying in or out.
Merseyside's a county full of contrasts—seaside towns, urban centres, villages, riverside paths and coastal views. There's energy and history wherever you go. Liverpool brings the culture and noise, while places like Southport offer space to breathe. The area's packed with stories, from industrial breakthroughs to Beatles legends, and whether you're into nature, nightlife or a quiet cuppa somewhere with a view, there's room for it all. The people are proud, the humour's sharp, and you're never far from something unexpected.
