Earl Shilton is a friendly, down-to-earth market town nestled in south-west Leicestershire, not far from Hinckley. With a mix of traditional charm and everyday convenience, it's the kind of place where people tend to stay once they've settled. You'll find a strong sense of local community, plenty of green spaces, and a town centre that covers the essentials without fuss. It's well-positioned for commuting too, sitting just off the A47 with easy access to both Leicester and Coventry.
There's been a settlement at Earl Shilton since at least the Domesday Book, where it was referred to as “Shelstone.” Over the centuries it grew steadily, with much of its development taking place during the industrial boom. It was once a bustling centre for footwear manufacturing, particularly boot and shoe making, which helped shape its character. Today the town has a population of around 10,000 and continues to evolve while still holding onto its roots. You'll still find nods to its past dotted about, from old buildings to street names that hint at its industrial history.
Locally, the town is home to a number of parks and green spaces like Wood Street Park and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Park, which are great for a wander or a family picnic. For a pint or a bite to eat, there are a few proper locals' pubs and cafes, and you're never far from a chip shop or takeaway. In the wider area, you've got some cracking day-out spots – Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre is just a short drive away, and that's a must for history lovers. For something a bit more peaceful, head to National Trust's Stoneywell or English Heritage's Kirby Muxloe Castle – both are tucked-away gems within easy reach.
Further afield in Leicestershire, there's loads going on. Bradgate Park is brilliant for a weekend ramble, and you might spot a few deer if you're lucky. The city of Leicester is less than half an hour away and has everything from the King Richard III Visitor Centre to buzzing food markets and live music spots. Melton Mowbray, famous for its pork pies and stilton, is a good day out too, especially if you like a bit of foodie tourism. The county's a lovely mix of villages, rolling countryside, and industrial history.
Getting in and out of Earl Shilton is pretty straightforward. The A47 passes right by the town and links up to Leicester and Hinckley easily. There isn't a train station in the town itself, but Hinckley station is only a few miles away and runs regular services to Birmingham, Leicester, and beyond. Buses serve the town centre and surrounding areas, and for longer journeys, East Midlands Airport and Birmingham Airport are both under an hour's drive, depending on traffic. You're never too far from a main road or transport link.
Leicestershire as a county is a real mixed bag – in a good way. It's got deep historical roots, loads of hidden treasures, and a good balance of city energy and rural calm. The local economy's a blend of agriculture, manufacturing, and retail, with plenty of small businesses keeping things going. It's also home to a fair few festivals, farmers' markets, and traditional fairs throughout the year. People here are proud of where they're from, and there's a welcoming vibe just about everywhere you go.
