Wigston is a lively town in Leicestershire, sitting just a few miles south of Leicester city centre. It's one of those places that's big enough to have all the essentials but still feels like a proper community town. You've got a bustling high street, plenty of green space, and easy access to both countryside and city life. It's known for being well-connected and friendly, with a good mix of housing, schools and shops – the kind of place that draws families and commuters alike.

Wigston's roots run deep, with records going back to the Domesday Book. The name itself comes from the Anglo-Saxon “Wicga's tun” meaning Wicga's farm or settlement. Over the centuries, the town grew steadily, mainly thanks to the knitting and hosiery trades, which were huge in the area during the 18th and 19th centuries. More recently, it's developed into a popular residential town, with a population hovering around 35,000 when including neighbouring areas like South Wigston and Kilby Bridge.

In terms of things to see and do, Wigston isn't flashy – but it's got charm. The Peace Memorial Park is a peaceful little green space with a play area and community feel. There's the Framework Knitters Museum just up the road in Wigston Fields, which gives you a glimpse into the town's textile heritage. Around the area, you've got Fosse Park for shopping, and Leicester's just ten minutes away by car or train, with everything from the National Space Centre to the King Richard III Visitor Centre. If you're into your heritage sites, the National Trust's Stoneywell – a beautifully preserved Arts and Crafts cottage – isn't far, and English Heritage's Jewry Wall Museum in Leicester offers Roman ruins and artefacts.

If you fancy going further afield, Leicestershire's got loads to offer. You can explore Bradgate Park, which is perfect for walks, deer-spotting and history buffs (Lady Jane Grey's childhood home is there). Bosworth Battlefield is another top spot, where you can dive into the Wars of the Roses history. Belvoir Castle's a bit of a trek but worth the drive, and for family days out, Twycross Zoo and the Great Central Railway hit the mark. Market towns like Melton Mowbray and Loughborough also make for great day trips, especially if you're fond of local produce or vintage markets.

Getting to Wigston's easy enough. South Wigston train station is just outside the main town centre and links straight into Leicester, Birmingham, and even down to London with a change. By road, it's right off the A5199 and not far from the M1 and M69, so you can head north or south with no trouble. East Midlands Airport is the closest, around 30 minutes away by car, with flights to Europe and beyond. There are regular local buses too, connecting the town with surrounding villages and city hotspots.

Leicestershire as a county is a lovely mix of traditional market towns, city buzz, and open countryside. It's not just Leicester itself that stands out – places like Market Harborough, Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Oakham (technically just outside the county line) give you a flavour of rural England. The county's also got a proud industrial past, with strong ties to engineering, textiles, and mining. These days, it's a great place to live or visit – well-connected, full of variety, and home to some cracking local food, including the world-famous Melton Mowbray pork pie and Stilton cheese.

We hope you found this Wigston tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
