Oadby is a pleasant and leafy town just a few miles south-east of Leicester city centre. It's one of those places that strikes a good balance between suburban peace and urban convenience. Known for its strong sense of community and green spaces, it's particularly popular with families, professionals, and retirees alike. With good schools, well-kept parks, and a mix of shops and eateries, it's got everything you'd expect from a well-established town.

Historically, Oadby has been around since Roman times, with plenty of archaeological finds cropping up in the area. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Oldebi”, and over the centuries it remained a relatively small village until the Victorian era, when it expanded due to its appeal as a commuter town. Today, it's home to around 25,000 people, many of whom work in nearby Leicester or at the University of Leicester's botanical gardens, which are based right in the town. It's grown steadily but still retains a villagey charm, with bits of its older past woven into the modern layout.

There's plenty to keep you busy in Oadby itself. One of the highlights is the University of Leicester Botanic Garden, which offers a lovely walk among beautifully kept grounds and greenhouses. For those into sport and racing, the Leicester Racecourse sits just on the edge of town and hosts both horse racing events and community shows. The Parade is the town's main shopping street, lined with a mix of independent shops, cafés, and bigger names. If you're up for exploring nearby spots, you're well-placed – the National Trust's Stoneywell is a short drive away and well worth a visit, while English Heritage's Ashby de la Zouch Castle is a great day out for families and history buffs.

A bit further afield, Leicestershire has loads on offer. Bradgate Park is a favourite for walkers and nature lovers, and you can easily while away a day exploring the ruins of Lady Jane Grey's old home. Bosworth Battlefield gives you a good dose of historical intrigue, especially if you're into the Wars of the Roses. Market Harborough and Melton Mowbray are both great for browsing independent shops and farmers' markets, and if you've got kids in tow, Twinlakes and Twycross Zoo are popular options that aren't too far down the road.

Getting to and from Oadby is pretty straightforward. There's no train station in the town itself, but South Wigston and Leicester stations are nearby, offering connections to Birmingham, Nottingham, London and beyond. By car, the A6 runs straight through the town, and the M1 and M69 are easily accessible for longer trips. Local buses run regularly between Oadby and Leicester, and East Midlands Airport is the nearest international airport – just under an hour away by car, depending on traffic.

Leicestershire as a whole is a diverse and interesting county. It's got everything from buzzing cities and busy towns to quiet countryside and picture-postcard villages. Leicester itself is a lively multicultural hub with excellent food, a growing arts scene, and strong sporting ties. The rest of the county is dotted with historic landmarks, traditional pubs, and scenic walking routes. It's a place where you can hop from market town to castle ruins and then back to a friendly pub for a decent Sunday roast.

We hope you found this Oadby tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
