Stoneywell is a rather special National Trust property that is tucked into the rocky countryside near Ulverscroft in north-west Leicestershire. Built between 1897 and 1899, the cottage was designed by Arts and Crafts architect Ernest Gimson for his brother Sydney, and seems to grow naturally from its Charnwood Forest surroundings. Its rugged stone walls, unusual shape and handcrafted interiors make it quite different from the grand country houses that are normally associated with National Trust properties.
Inside the house, everything has been deliberately kept homely rather than overly polished, with original furniture, woodwork and everyday possessions helping tell the story of the Gimson family. The cottage sits within an informal garden and woodland, where rocky outcrops and twisting paths add to the overall atmosphere of this place. Because Stoneywell is relatively small and access is carefully managed, visits will usually need to be booked in advance. Visitor parking is provided some distance away from the cottage, with transport taking visitors to the property. Facilities that can be found at Stoneywell include guided visits, toilets, refreshments, outdoor seating and places to enjoy the surrounding countryside. Bradgate Park, Beacon Hill and Ulverscroft Nature Reserve are close by, so it is easy enough to make a full day of exploring this attractive corner of Charnwood.
