Kirby Muxloe Castle is one of Leicestershire's more unusual historic sites, It sits beside the village rather than dominating the landscape from a hilltop as many othere castles do. Despite its name, it was really intended to be a fashionable fortified manor house. William, Lord Hastings, started building it in 1480, using local red brick at a time when brick construction was still considered to be something of a status symbol in England. The design included a broad moat, an imposing gatehouse and corner towers, with decorative darker brickwork worked into various parts of the building.
Things took a dramatic turn in 1483 when Hastings, previously a powerful supporter of Edward IV, was suddenly executed on the orders of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who shortly afterwards became Richard III. Construction slowed down after Hastings’s death and finally stopped in 1484, leaving his ambitious residence unfinished. The surviving gatehouse and west tower give today's visitors a fascinating idea of what might have been, and the moat makes the ruins particularly atmospheric. Nowadays the site is cared for by English Heritage and opens for tours on selected dates. Visitors can picnic in the grassy grounds, dogs on leads are welcome and free parking is available, although everyday visitor facilities at the castle itself are fairly limited.
