Portishead is a lively coastal town perched on the Severn Estuary in Somerset, offering a mix of marina life, green open spaces and a strong sense of community. Once a quiet fishing village, it's grown into a popular spot for families and commuters alike, with sea views on one side and rolling countryside on the other. The town centre has plenty to offer, and the scenic Lake Grounds are a favourite place to stroll, picnic or just sit and watch the world go by.

The town's roots go back centuries, with a name that literally means “port at the head of the river”. Its history is tied to maritime trade, though it wasn't until the 19th century that the town really started to take off, thanks to the development of the docks and the arrival of the railway. Over the years, Portishead has shifted from industrial to residential and leisure-focused, with the former docklands now transformed into a smart marina and waterside apartments.

Today, Portishead has a relaxed but modern feel. There's the vibrant marina packed with boats, cafés and restaurants, and nearby parks like Eastwood and Battery Point, which offer cracking views across to Wales. The high street and surrounding area have all the essentials—shops, schools, pubs and leisure facilities—and the community spirit is strong, with plenty of events and clubs to get stuck into. You'll find local markets, sports clubs, and even open-air swimming at the lido during warmer months.

Being so well-placed, Portishead makes a good base for exploring the rest of Somerset. The Mendip Hills are just a drive away for anyone after fresh air and countryside, and historic sites like Wells Cathedral, Cheddar Gorge and Glastonbury Tor are all reachable within a day out. Head south and you'll hit Exmoor National Park, or keep going west along the coast for beaches and traditional seaside towns.

Although there's no train station in Portishead at the moment, there are hopes for one to reopen in future. For now, buses run regularly into Bristol, and the M5 makes driving simple—just hop on at Gordano services and you're off. Bristol Temple Meads is the nearest mainline station, and from there it's a quick journey to London or further south-west. Bristol Airport is only about half an hour away, offering domestic and European flights.

Somerset is a county of contrasts, where coastlines meet countryside and ancient traditions live alongside modern ways of life. From the cider farms and market towns in the heart of the county to the rugged moors and postcard villages out west, it's a place where locals are proud of their roots. The pace of life tends to be easygoing, but there's always something happening, whether it's a local festival, a farmers' market or a long walk through the hills.
