Stourbridge sits comfortably on the edge of the Black Country, where the West Midlands starts blending into the Worcestershire countryside. It's one of those towns that feels like it's got a bit of everything — bustling high street, a proper market town vibe, strong local pride, and plenty of green space nearby. Stourbridge has always carried that slightly calmer pace compared to its bigger neighbours, with tree-lined streets, tidy suburbs, and lovely walks along the canals and rivers that wind through the area.

The town's history goes right back to the Middle Ages, but Stourbridge really made its name in glassmaking. By the 17th century, it had become one of the world's leading centres for fine crystal and glassware, attracting skilled craftsmen from across Europe. The rich deposits of coal, fireclay and sand in the surrounding area fuelled the industry for centuries. The glassworks dominated local life, alongside iron forging and other trades that made use of the local natural resources. Today, although most of the big glass factories have gone, you'll still find small workshops keeping the tradition alive. Stourbridge has a population of around 64,000 these days and is known as one of the more desirable places to live in the West Midlands.

There's plenty to see and do around town. The Ruskin Glass Centre keeps the glassmaking heritage alive, with artisan studios, exhibitions and workshops. Mary Stevens Park offers a peaceful green space for walks, boating, and family days out, while the Stourbridge Canal gives lovely routes for a stroll or a cycle ride. A little further out, you've got National Trust gems like Kinver Edge and the Rock Houses, with their unique sandstone cave dwellings, and Wightwick Manor over near Wolverhampton, a beautiful Arts and Crafts house. English Heritage's Dudley Castle isn't far either, offering sweeping views across the Black Country.

Wider West Midlands attractions aren't far away either. Birmingham offers its world-class shopping, museums and nightlife, while Wolverhampton brings its theatre, art galleries and football. Dudley has the Black Country Living Museum, the zoo, and canal tunnels, while Coventry serves up its cathedral, museums and medieval streets. There's plenty of green space too, with places like Clent Hills and Lickey Hills perfect for a proper walk with a view.

Getting to Stourbridge is simple enough. The A458 and A491 run right through the town, with easy links to the M5 and wider motorway network. Stourbridge Junction railway station offers regular trains into Birmingham Snow Hill and beyond. The Stourbridge Town branch line is famously short — one of the shortest in Europe — linking the town centre to the main line. Local buses cover the surrounding areas, and Birmingham Airport is about 40 minutes away by car, making it easy for flights both domestic and international.

The county of West Midlands ties together an impressive mix of busy cities, industrial towns, leafy suburbs and open countryside. You've got Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Solihull and the Black Country all packed into a region that's shaped Britain's industrial story while steadily reinventing itself. It's a place full of variety, always moving forward but still grounded in its roots, with that familiar friendly Midlands charm never far away.

We hope you found this Stourbridge tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
