Walsall sits just north-west of Birmingham, right at the heart of the Black Country. It's a town that wears its industrial heritage proudly while steadily modernising with new developments, parks, shopping areas and cultural spots. You've got that proper Black Country feel here – strong community ties, a rich history in manufacturing, and a town centre that mixes old red-brick buildings with shiny new developments. It's well placed too, offering easy access to Birmingham, Wolverhampton and the rest of the West Midlands, while still feeling like its own place entirely.

Walsall's roots go back as far as the 11th century, but like much of the Black Country, it really grew in the 18th and 19th centuries thanks to the Industrial Revolution. It became world famous for its leather trade — saddles, harnesses, gloves and other leather goods made here were exported across the globe. The town was nicknamed "the town of a hundred trades" for good reason, with metalworking, lock-making and other industries all thriving alongside the leather trade. Today, Walsall has a population of around 286,000, including its surrounding suburbs, and while industry still plays a role, the town has shifted towards retail, education, and business services.

There's plenty to see and do in Walsall itself. The New Art Gallery Walsall is one of the standout attractions, with its impressive collections of modern and contemporary art. Walsall Arboretum offers a huge green space right in the middle of town, perfect for walking, running or a quiet picnic by the lake. The Leather Museum tells the story of Walsall's saddlery and leatherwork heritage. Not far away, National Trust sites like Moseley Old Hall and Wightwick Manor give you a real taste of local history and architecture. English Heritage's nearby Dudley Castle and Boscobel House add even more options for those after a bit of history.

The wider West Midlands is full of attractions. Birmingham's close by for shopping, museums and nightlife. Wolverhampton has its theatre, galleries and football. Dudley offers the Black Country Living Museum, canal tunnels and zoo. Coventry, not too far away, brings its impressive cathedral and medieval past. The whole region is criss-crossed with canals that offer peaceful routes for walking or cycling, alongside stretches of green belt and urban parks that break up the busy towns and cities.

Getting to Walsall is easy. The M6 runs right past the town, linking it directly to Birmingham, Staffordshire, and beyond. Walsall railway station offers regular services into Birmingham New Street and other nearby towns, while bus routes fan out across the Black Country and the wider West Midlands. The Midland Metro light rail extension is slowly creeping closer too. Birmingham Airport is about half an hour's drive away, offering plenty of domestic and international flight options.

The county of West Midlands is a mixed patchwork of big cities, proud industrial towns, green spaces, rivers and canals. Birmingham sits at the centre of it all, but towns like Walsall, Dudley, Wolverhampton, Coventry and Solihull all add their own distinct character to the county. It's a region with a strong sense of identity, built on hard work, invention and a fair bit of humour, always moving forward while staying grounded in its history.

We hope you found this Walsall tourist map useful for your visit to the area.
