Willenhall sits quietly between Wolverhampton and Walsall, right in the middle of the West Midlands, where the old industrial heartlands start blending into leafy suburbs and housing estates. It's one of those places that might not shout for attention but carries a lot of local pride, with tight-knit communities, small businesses, and plenty of history hidden in plain sight. While the factories may have quietened down, Willenhall still holds onto its identity as a proper Black Country town.
The town's history goes back centuries, but Willenhall made its real mark during the Industrial Revolution. It became world-famous for its lock-making industry, supplying locks and keys across the globe. At one point, almost every family in Willenhall had some link to the trade, either directly or through the many workshops dotted across the area. Even today, locks remain a proud part of the town's identity. The Locksmith's House museum tells that story well. Over time, as heavy industry declined, Willenhall adapted, but its industrial past is still very much part of local character. Today, around 49,000 people live in Willenhall, which now serves largely as a residential and business hub within easy reach of the bigger cities nearby.
There's a handful of attractions within Willenhall itself. The Locksmith's House stands out, giving visitors a proper look into the town's lock-making heritage. Willenhall Memorial Park offers open space for walking, play areas for families, and occasional events throughout the year. The town centre has its fair share of pubs, cafés, shops, and local businesses, while nearby Rough Wood Chase gives a bit more greenery for those who want a peaceful walk. Just outside town, National Trust properties like Moseley Old Hall and Wightwick Manor offer beautiful gardens and buildings full of history. English Heritage's Dudley Castle isn't far either, bringing in a bit of medieval drama.
Further across the West Midlands, there's plenty to explore. Birmingham offers world-class shopping, theatres, museums and a vibrant food scene. Wolverhampton has its galleries, theatres and football. Dudley's Black Country Living Museum brings the area's industrial past to life, while Coventry's cathedral and medieval lanes add a different feel altogether. The region is also packed with parks, woodlands, canals and open countryside if you're after a break from town life.
Getting to Willenhall is fairly straightforward. It sits right next to the M6, with Junction 10 just a stone's throw away, making road access quick and easy. The nearest railway stations are in Walsall and Wolverhampton, offering regular services into Birmingham and further afield. Local buses cover Willenhall well, linking it with the surrounding towns and cities. Birmingham Airport sits about half an hour away by car, offering plenty of domestic and international flight options.
The county of West Midlands is a proper mix — you've got the big city life of Birmingham, industrial towns like Wolverhampton, Walsall and Dudley, suburban areas like Solihull and Sutton Coldfield, and the familiar warmth of Black Country towns like Willenhall. It's a region built on hard work, invention and local pride, where history and modern life rub along side by side, full of that unmistakable Midlands character.
