Enfield sits in the northern reaches of Greater London, blending suburban calm with easy access to the buzz of the capital. It's got a bit of everything – leafy parks, a solid town centre, decent schools, and a long-standing community feel. The town has grown steadily over the years, attracting families, commuters and those who want a slice of London without the full-on pace.
There's a fair bit of history tied to Enfield. It was once a small market town on the edge of Middlesex before becoming part of Greater London in the '60s. It saw real growth with the arrival of the railway in the 19th century, which turned it into a popular commuter spot. The town's roots go even deeper though, with records dating back to the Domesday Book. It was known for armaments production at the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield Lock – famously the birthplace of the Lee-Enfield rifle. The population of the Borough today sits at around 330,000, spread across a mix of neighbourhoods that range from the bustling to the green and quiet.
There's no shortage of places to visit. Forty Hall, a fine Jacobean manor house, is a National Trust gem and a proper local favourite, with sprawling gardens and countryside walks on its doorstep. Capel Manor Gardens is another must-see – beautiful themed gardens and a good day out for families. Head a little further and you've got Myddelton House Gardens and Whitewebbs Park, both full of charm. Just outside the area, English Heritage's Wrest Park and Waltham Abbey draw visitors looking for that classic British history hit. Trent Park, now partly a university campus, offers woodland walks and glimpses of wartime secrets – it was once a centre for German officer interrogation.
Zooming out a bit, the wider Greater London area has endless appeal. There's the big hitters, of course – the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the British Museum – but also quirky pockets like Camden Market, Greenwich Park, and the South Bank. London Zoo's just down the way, and Hampstead Heath gives you skyline views that are hard to beat. Whether you're after art, sport, theatre or food from every corner of the world, it's all within reach.
Enfield's well-connected for getting in and out. The A10 and M25 skirt the borough, making road travel fairly straightforward. There are several train stations – Enfield Town, Enfield Chase, Southbury, and more – that'll get you into Liverpool Street or Moorgate in under half an hour. Overground and national rail lines criss-cross the area, and there's a good spread of buses too. If you're flying in, London City Airport is the closest, about 40 minutes away by car or train. Stansted's not far either, especially by train from Tottenham Hale, which links easily with Enfield.
Greater London, as a county, is a bit of a unique setup. It's not quite the same as the traditional counties you'll find elsewhere in the country. Instead, it's a patchwork of boroughs, each with its own character and local governance. It wraps around central London and reaches out into the suburbs and greenbelt. You'll find historic market towns, riverside villages, regenerated docklands, and some of the most diverse communities in the UK, all crammed into this sprawling urban web.
