Greenwich is one of those places that feels like it's got its own rhythm. Tucked along the south bank of the Thames, it blends maritime history, royal connections and a creative buzz that never quite feels as frantic as central London. It's the sort of town where you can stroll from a bustling market into vast green spaces without blinking, and still be close enough to the City to make a quick commute.

There's real depth to Greenwich's story. It was once the site of a royal palace – Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Mary I were all born here. The area has long been tied to Britain's naval past, with the Royal Navy College and the Cutty Sark playing key roles. The Royal Observatory put it on the global map too, giving us Greenwich Mean Time and that famous Prime Meridian line. These days, it's a lively borough of Greater London with a population of just over 280,000, spread across riverside flats, Georgian terraces and new-builds that pop up faster than you'd think.

There's plenty to see and do around town. The National Maritime Museum is a proper highlight, packed with stories of exploration and naval life. The Queen's House next door is an architectural gem, and you can't miss the Royal Observatory up in Greenwich Park – the views alone are worth the walk. The park itself is a green escape with deer, flower gardens and plenty of space to unwind. Just beyond, English Heritage's Eltham Palace mixes medieval and Art Deco in a way that works surprisingly well, and the Thames Path gives you miles of riverside walks. Charlton House and Severndroog Castle offer more history just up the road. The Old Royal Naval College, with its painted hall, is often called London's Sistine Chapel – and for good reason. For gardens and a quieter vibe, East Greenwich Pleasaunce is a bit of a hidden gem.

Zoom out, and Greater London's full of old favourites and new discoveries. From Westminster Abbey to Covent Garden, Kew Gardens to the Victoria & Albert Museum, it's impossible to run out of things to do. You can catch a West End show, take a boat down the Thames, or just get lost wandering through the likes of Notting Hill or Shoreditch. London's layers run deep – from Roman ruins to street art, and food from just about every corner of the globe.

Getting to Greenwich is a doddle. You've got the DLR running straight through with stops like Cutty Sark and Greenwich station linking you up to Canary Wharf and Bank. There are mainline rail connections too, plus plenty of buses. Thames Clippers are a scenic way to arrive by river, especially from central London. The A2 and Blackwall Tunnel handle most of the road traffic, though things can clog up at rush hour. If you're flying in, London City Airport's your best bet – just a short hop away by DLR or taxi.

Greater London isn't your average county. It's more like a jigsaw of boroughs stitched together with postcodes, train lines and history. Greenwich is just one piece, sitting comfortably on the southeast side. The county stretches out from the West End to the suburbs, mixing village-like corners with full-on urban sprawl. It doesn't follow the old county lines – instead it works more like a region, with all the variety you'd expect from one of the most diverse cities on the planet.
