Kingston-upon-Thames, often just called Kingston, is one of those places that straddles the line between London suburb and historic market town. Sitting snugly along the Thames, it's got a proper riverside charm, full of cafes, pubs, and leafy walks. You get the buzz of the capital without losing that sense of space, and there's always something going on—from shopping to live music to just a quiet pint by the water. It's one of those spots that manages to feel busy and laid-back all at once.
Kingston's roots go back a long way—proper Anglo-Saxon era stuff. It's famously the site where several kings were crowned, and it's even in the name. By medieval times, it had grown into a key market town, and that commercial spirit never really left. The market's still going strong, with stalls tucked into the old square surrounded by historic buildings. These days, the population's pushing past 40,000, but when you factor in the wider borough it's closer to 180,000. Despite all that growth, it still clings on to its historic character, especially around the town centre and riverside.
The town's packed with things to do. There's the Rose Theatre, a lively arts hub that pulls in a mix of new talent and big names. The Bentall Centre offers proper retail therapy, and there's a great mix of independent shops scattered through the old lanes nearby. Right by the river, you've got Canbury Gardens and Queens Promenade, perfect for a lazy stroll or riverside picnic. Just out of town, Hampton Court Palace is a real showstopper—Henry VIII's old pad, full of drama and grandeur. A short drive gets you to Claremont Landscape Garden, a peaceful National Trust site that's great for families or just escaping the buzz. There's also Marble Hill House across the river in Twickenham, a proper English Heritage gem with a story or two to tell.
Surrey doesn't hold back when it comes to days out. You've got Box Hill if you fancy a walk with a view, or head to Polesden Lacey for a dose of luxury and landscaped gardens. The rural stretch near Farnham and Haslemere offers cracking walking trails, while Painshill Park near Cobham is a hidden treasure of follies, lakes, and bridges. Then there's RHS Wisley, which is an absolute dream for garden lovers. The county's full of tucked-away spots, historic villages, and green spaces where you can take a proper breather.
Transport-wise, Kingston's a breeze. Trains from the town station get you into London Waterloo in about half an hour, and there are loads of buses linking up with neighbouring towns and London boroughs. The A3 is your main road in and out, making it easy to reach central London or head towards Guildford and the south coast. Heathrow Airport's the closest for flights—around 30 minutes by car or cab—and Gatwick's not much further if you're heading abroad. Being on the edge of London means you've got that extra connectivity without all the faff of being right in the middle of it.
Surrey as a whole is one of the UK's most sought-after counties, and it's not hard to see why. It's got proper countryside, loads of green belt, and yet it brushes up right against the capital. Towns like Guildford, Farnham, and Reigate all bring their own charm, but it's also full of little villages where life moves at a slower pace. You'll find top-notch schools, scenic walks, and pubs that feel like they've been there since the dawn of time. Surrey's the sort of place where you can get out into the fresh air without feeling miles from civilisation.
