Horley is a lively town in the far south of Surrey, right on the edge of the county where it brushes up against the Sussex border. It's got a strong community spirit, a solid high street, and the handy distinction of being a stone's throw from Gatwick Airport. Despite that, it's not all hustle and planes—there's a real mix of modern convenience and traditional touches, with plenty of green space tucked around the edges. It's the sort of place that's always got something going on, but still manages to keep a relaxed pace about it.

The roots of Horley go deep, with records showing it existed well before the Domesday Book in 1086. It remained a fairly small farming village for centuries until the railway arrived in the 1840s, which opened the door to growth and turned it into a proper commuter spot. The real boom came with the development of Gatwick in the 20th century, which brought jobs, new housing and plenty of change. Today, the town has a population of around 25,000 and continues to grow, though it still holds onto its village origins in places like the conservation area near Church Road and the old high street buildings that lend character.

Horley's got a fair few things to keep locals and visitors occupied. The town centre is dotted with independent shops, pubs and cafés, and you'll find both chain favourites and local gems. There's a leisure centre, a couple of parks, and the Archway Theatre, a community-run space with a strong following. Just outside town you'll find the National Trust-owned Harewoods Estate—lovely for a countryside walk—and Reigate Hill offers great views across the North Downs. If you fancy stepping further back in time, English Heritage's Reigate Fort is a short drive away and gives you both a glimpse into history and a cracking view to go with it.

Wider Surrey opens up a lot more. You've got Box Hill with its sweeping views and cycle trails, Leith Hill for long walks and a climb to the tower, and places like Dorking and Guildford for a proper mooch round the shops or a sit-down lunch. RHS Garden Wisley is full of floral wonder, while Denbies Wine Estate near Dorking gives you a taste of the local grape. From castles to quiet commons, Surrey's packed with places that make for easy, satisfying day trips.

Getting to and from Horley is about as easy as it gets. The railway station has regular services into London Victoria and London Bridge, and you can be in the capital in under an hour. Trains also head south towards Brighton and the coast, and of course, Gatwick Airport is practically on the doorstep—just a short walk or a one-stop train ride away. The M23 and A23 run nearby, linking you with Crawley, Brighton, the M25 and beyond. Local buses run regularly and there's good cycle access for those who prefer a slower pace.

Surrey is one of those counties that gives you the best of both worlds. You've got easy access to London, but also hills, woods, old villages and market towns that feel a world away. It's a county of contrasts—smart and rural, old and new, fast-paced and slow-living all at once. Whether you're into food, history, nature or just finding a good spot for a pint on a Sunday afternoon, Surrey's got something for everyone.
