Molesey is a laid-back suburban riverside area in north Surrey, where the Thames flows gently past leafy paths, rowing clubs and family-run pubs. It's actually made up of two areas—East Molesey and West Molesey—but to most locals, it's all simply “Molesey.” It's the sort of place where community spirit still counts for something, where the pace is gentler, and where the mix of green space and decent amenities makes it popular with families, professionals and long-timers alike. It's not flashy, but it's got character and charm in spades.

The roots of Molesey go right back to Saxon times, and its name is thought to come from “Mul's Island,” possibly referring to an early landowner. The town stayed relatively quiet until the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, which brought a wave of visitors and new housing. The area became a popular spot for Victorian day-trippers heading to Hampton Court Palace or out boating on the river. Over time, Molesey grew into a full-blown town, though it still clings to its villagey feel in parts. The current population is around 20,000, and while it's changed over the years, there's still a real sense of belonging here.

There's plenty to do in and around Molesey, especially if you like riverside strolls and historic surroundings. East Molesey borders Hampton Court Palace, one of the finest attractions in the area and full of Tudor splendour, beautiful gardens and a proper maze to get lost in. The towpath along the Thames is perfect for a long walk or a lazy cycle, and you'll often spot rowers from Molesey Boat Club out training. In town, you'll find friendly cafés, old pubs, a scattering of independent shops and the charming Molesey Lock. Bushey Park is just across the bridge—ideal for deer-spotting or a peaceful picnic—and the National Trust's Claremont Landscape Garden isn't far, offering landscaped beauty and historic features. The whole area is peppered with lovely spots, from The Wilderness to Imber Court Sports Club.

Wider Surrey is full of gems if you're up for a short drive or train journey. You've got Box Hill for hiking and views, RHS Garden Wisley for plant lovers, and places like Guildford and Farnham for proper shopping and history. Denbies Wine Estate near Dorking is a top day out for those who fancy a wander round the vines followed by a glass of something local. For families, Chessington World of Adventures isn't far, and the county's packed with country pubs, market towns and green walks that suit all sorts of days out.

Molesey's well linked to the rest of Surrey and into London. The nearest stations are Hampton Court and Thames Ditton, both offering services into London Waterloo in about 35 minutes. Roads are decent too—Molesey sits close to the A3 and M25, so heading out by car is straightforward. Gatwick and Heathrow airports are both within 45 minutes depending on traffic, and buses run regularly through the town linking to Kingston, Esher and further afield. Cycling's popular locally, especially along the river and through the parks.

Surrey as a county doesn't make a fuss about itself—it just quietly gets on with being one of the most varied and appealing places to live in the country. There's a great balance here: smart commuter towns, peaceful villages, woodlands, rivers and heaps of history. It's green, well-kept, and full of character, with something for just about everyone—whether you want fast trains and city access or somewhere to slow down, stretch your legs and listen to the birds.
