Haslemere is a handsome little market town tucked right into the south-west corner of Surrey, brushing up against the borders of Hampshire and West Sussex. Surrounded by rolling hills and ancient woodland, it's got a relaxed, well-heeled charm, with a thriving high street, old-world architecture and a real sense of place. It's popular with walkers, artists, commuters and families alike—quiet enough to feel rural, but with enough buzz to keep things interesting.
The town's roots run deep, with Haslemere recorded as far back as the 13th century. It began as a market settlement and was granted a borough charter in 1394. Thanks to its position on the main coaching route between London and Portsmouth, it developed a reputation as a busy stopping-off point. The arrival of the railway in the 1850s saw it grow further, drawing in well-to-do Londoners looking for country retreats. These days, the population sits around 17,000, and while it's grown into a smart commuter town, Haslemere hasn't lost touch with its historical core—it's full of timber-framed buildings, hidden alleyways and characterful pubs.
There's plenty to see and do. The town centre is dotted with cafes, restaurants, boutiques and a lovely museum that offers a proper slice of local heritage. Just a short stroll away is Swan Barn Farm, cared for by the National Trust, and perfect for woodland walks and spotting wildlife. Further afield, you've got the Devil's Punch Bowl and Hindhead Commons, a dramatic landscape of steep-sided valleys and open heathland, ideal for walking and soaking up big views. English Heritage's Waverley Abbey is only a short drive away and makes for a peaceful historic wander.
If you're exploring more widely, Surrey has loads to offer. The Surrey Hills are right on your doorstep and stretch all the way across the county, with beauty spots like Box Hill, Leith Hill and Frensham Ponds offering endless opportunities for getting outdoors. RHS Garden Wisley is a must for plant lovers, and the county is dotted with market towns like Farnham and Guildford, both full of independent shops and decent eateries. For a bit of history and grandeur, Polesden Lacey and Clandon Park are well worth visiting.
Haslemere's got great links. The town has its own station, with regular services to London Waterloo in under an hour, as well as direct trains to Portsmouth and other south coast destinations. The A3 is nearby, connecting you easily to Guildford, London and the M25. Heathrow and Gatwick airports are both within an hour by car, depending on traffic. Local buses link Haslemere with nearby villages and towns, and the South Downs Way isn't far if you prefer getting around on foot or by bike.
Surrey as a county manages to balance the traditional with the modern. You'll find chocolate-box villages and farmland alongside lively towns and high-end homes. It's a county that's well-connected, yet criss-crossed by countryside. From national parks to stylish cafes, ancient churches to vineyard tours, it's got a bit of everything. While parts of it are undeniably polished, it still feels real—friendly, familiar, and full of interesting corners to explore.
