Ash is a friendly, down-to-earth village in the far west of Surrey, close to the borders of both Hampshire and Berkshire. It's a place where countryside meets convenience—green spaces, quiet lanes and nature reserves blend in with good local amenities and easy access to nearby towns. With a strong community spirit, family-friendly feel and a touch of rural charm, Ash is the kind of place where people know their neighbours, and the pace of life is a little more relaxed.
The history of Ash stretches back centuries, with records going as far as the Domesday Book in 1086. Originally a farming and woodland community, it remained fairly small until the railway came through in the 19th century, which opened up connections and brought in new residents. It saw more expansion after the Second World War, developing into a proper village with shops, schools and housing estates. Today, the population is just over 18,000 when including Ash Vale and Ash Green. Despite its growth, Ash has managed to keep its village atmosphere, especially around the church, the local pubs and the old cottages near the centre.
There's plenty to explore in and around the village. Ash ranges across open commons, woodland and riverside paths, with the Basingstoke Canal and Ash Ranges offering scenic walks and wildlife. The village has a library, a handful of local shops, takeaways and friendly pubs. Just beyond the village, you'll find the nature reserve at Tongham Pools and the sprawling commons near Normandy and Mytchett. Farnham Park isn't far off either, and National Trust spots like The Vyne and Winkworth Arboretum are a short drive away. English Heritage's Waverley Abbey makes a great day out with a bit of history and a peaceful riverside setting.
Across wider Surrey, there's a whole mix of attractions. Box Hill and the Surrey Hills are ideal for a day's ramble with a picnic stop, or head over to RHS Garden Wisley for something more curated and colourful. Guildford is nearby, with its castle, cobbled high street and riverside walks, while Farnham offers a lovely mix of shops, cafes and a castle keep to climb. You've also got Frensham Ponds for waterside strolls or a paddle on a summer afternoon, and Denbies Wine Estate near Dorking for a taste of the local grape.
Getting in and out of Ash is nice and easy. There are two stations—Ash and Ash Vale—both offering good links to Guildford, Reading, Aldershot and London Waterloo. The A31 and A331 are nearby, which connect to the M3 and A3, making road travel straightforward. Heathrow is about 45 minutes away by car, while Gatwick is slightly further but still within reach. Buses link Ash with Farnham, Aldershot and Guildford, and plenty of cycle-friendly routes run through the surrounding countryside.
Surrey as a county is a real mix of heritage, countryside and accessibility. It's home to historic towns, leafy lanes, proper pubs and rolling hills, all while staying within easy reach of London and the south coast. Whether you're into walking, culture, food or just good scenery, Surrey tends to deliver. It's got a grounded, welcoming feel to it, and the variety from village to village keeps things interesting without ever feeling far from home.
