Oxted is one of those towns that feels like it's got the best of both worlds—proper countryside charm mixed with the convenience of good transport links. It sits on the edge of the North Downs, with rolling hills just a stone's throw from the high street. The place has a calm, leafy feel, full of character and tucked-away corners, yet it's got a surprising amount going on. It's the kind of town where you can grab a coffee, go for a country walk, and still make it into London before lunch.
Oxted's roots go back centuries, with the original settlement based around what's now known as Old Oxted. It was your classic medieval village—pubs, churches, and cottages huddled along a narrow street. Things really picked up in the late 1800s when the railway arrived, sparking the development of New Oxted just to the east. That's where most of the shops, houses, and facilities now sit. The town's population is just over 11,000, and there's a good mix of families, commuters, and long-time locals, all adding to the laid-back but lively atmosphere.
There's more to Oxted than meets the eye. The Everyman Cinema, housed in an old Art Deco building, brings a touch of glamour, while Master Park and nearby Limpsfield Common offer loads of green space for walking, dog-watching, or just a sit-down with a sandwich. You've got pubs with proper character, cosy cafes, and a high street that blends the usual names with local gems. Nearby, Chartwell—the former home of Winston Churchill—is one of the area's top National Trust draws, packed with history and lovely gardens. Down House, where Darwin wrote On the Origin of Species, is also just a short drive and well worth a visit. If you fancy something a bit more low-key, Titsey Place & Gardens sits right on the edge of town and feels like a hidden treasure.
Zoom out a bit and Surrey's got loads more to offer. Polesden Lacey near Dorking is a real treat, especially in spring when the gardens come alive. Claremont Landscape Garden and Winkworth Arboretum are peaceful spots, good for wandering and clearing your head. Over near Guildford, you'll find Hatchlands Park and Clandon Park, and then there's Box Hill if you're after views that'll make your camera work overtime. Whether you're into heritage, hiking or just a good picnic spot, Surrey keeps you busy.
Getting to Oxted's pretty straightforward. Trains from Oxted Station run regularly into London Victoria and London Bridge, so it's a popular base for commuters. If you're driving, the A25 passes through town, and the M25 is close by, making it easy to hop around the South East. Gatwick is the closest airport—just under 30 minutes by car—and London Heathrow isn't too far either. Buses run through the town connecting the smaller villages and nearby towns, so you're not stuck if you're going local.
Surrey's one of those counties that surprises people. It's not just fancy houses and golf clubs—it's packed with green spaces, charming villages, and towns that all have their own flavour. From historic spots like Farnham and Reigate to hidden corners around the Surrey Hills, there's always something new to explore. It's well-placed too, rubbing shoulders with London but offering a real escape when you need it. Great for walkers, families, and anyone who fancies a bit of peace without being in the middle of nowhere.
