Cranleigh - Tucked into the Surrey Hills, Cranleigh is a charming village often called the largest in England, though it feels anything but overwhelming. It's got that proper village feel—tree-lined streets, a bustling high street, and plenty of green space. It's a spot where you'll find a friendly face behind the counter, a dog tied up outside the bakery, and a good mix of locals and visitors soaking up the laid-back atmosphere. Just enough going on without it feeling too busy.

Cranleigh has been around a while, originally known as Cranley before the name was tweaked in the 1800s to avoid confusion with Crawley. It grew from a rural settlement into a lively centre thanks to the arrival of the railway in the 19th century, which brought with it a fair bit of trade and new faces. While the railway's long gone, the village never lost that sense of being well-connected. These days, it's home to around 11,000 people, and you get a real mix—from young families to retirees, all making the most of what Cranleigh has to offer.

There's always something to do in and around the village. Cranleigh Arts Centre is a real hub, offering everything from live music and comedy to workshops and exhibitions. The Leisure Centre has a decent pool and gym, and the cricket green gives the place a classic English touch in summer. Just out of the village, you've got the likes of Winkworth Arboretum and Hatchlands Park—both National Trust gems perfect for a weekend wander. Loseley Park, with its Elizabethan mansion, is not far either, and worth a look for history buffs. For something even grander, head over to Guildford to see the ruins of Guildford Castle or take a stroll along the River Wey.

Wider Surrey offers plenty for a day out. Polesden Lacey near Dorking is one of those places that feels like it's from another time, all grand interiors and sweeping gardens. Claremont Landscape Garden and Box Hill offer stunning views and walks, while Clandon Park—despite the fire damage—is still a notable English Heritage site. Then there's RHS Garden Wisley, which is an absolute treat if you're even remotely into plants. Surrey really punches above its weight when it comes to things to see and do.

Getting to Cranleigh isn't too tricky, even without a train station. Most people come by road, with the A281 passing through nearby and linking you to Guildford in one direction and Horsham in the other. Guildford is the closest major train station—about 20 minutes by car or bus—offering regular services to London and beyond. Gatwick Airport is your nearest for flights, roughly 40 minutes away by car, and Heathrow's not much further if you're heading somewhere long-haul. Plenty of buses run in and out of the village too, so you're not cut off.

Surrey as a county has a bit of everything. You've got leafy villages like Cranleigh, market towns like Farnham and Reigate, and bigger spots like Woking and Guildford that still manage to keep a bit of old-world charm. It's a wealthy county, no denying that, but it doesn't feel too exclusive. There's a strong sense of heritage running through it, with historic houses, gardens, and commons all scattered across the landscape. And with the Surrey Hills designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it's as scenic as it is well-heeled.
