Farnham is a handsome Georgian town sitting on the western edge of Surrey, with cobbled streets, classic architecture and a market town charm that never feels forced. It's the sort of place where you can spend a morning browsing quirky shops, stop for a lazy lunch in a pub garden, and still be within touching distance of open countryside. There's a creative buzz too, thanks to the art school, and a real pride in its history and community. It's relaxed but not sleepy, stylish without being flashy.
Farnham's history stretches back to Roman times, and its location on an old coaching route helped it thrive in later centuries. By the medieval period, it had grown into a busy market town, trading wool and corn, and was granted the right to hold markets as early as the 13th century. The iconic Farnham Castle dates back to Norman times and has played host to bishops and royalty over the years. The town expanded further with the arrival of the railway in the 19th century and is now home to around 40,000 people. Despite that growth, it's still managed to keep its historical character and friendly atmosphere.
There's plenty to keep you occupied in and around the town. Farnham Castle is a must-see, with its keep, chapel and beautiful grounds overlooking the town. The Museum of Farnham is a great little spot housed in a Georgian townhouse, full of artefacts and stories from the area. Gostrey Meadow is a lovely green space near the river, ideal for a picnic or a lazy walk, and the Farnham Maltings is a fantastic arts and community centre with everything from theatre performances to craft markets. Just outside town you've got Waverley Abbey, managed by English Heritage, and the National Trust's Frensham Little Pond—perfect for a peaceful walk and a bit of wildlife spotting. There's also a scattering of local vineyards, garden centres and walking trails across the Surrey Hills.
Further afield, Surrey continues to impress. Box Hill, Leith Hill and the Devil's Punch Bowl all offer cracking views and miles of walking trails. Guildford, just down the road, has its castle, riverfront, shopping and plenty of places to eat and drink. RHS Garden Wisley is an absolute treat if you like a bit of colour and creativity, while Denbies Wine Estate near Dorking makes for a brilliant day out. Whether you fancy a big ramble, a quiet pub lunch, or a poke round a stately home, you're never far from something good.
Farnham's easy enough to get to. The train station has regular direct services into London Waterloo, taking just under an hour, and trains also run to Guildford and Alton. By road, the A31 passes right by, linking up with the A3 and M3, so whether you're heading into London or out towards the coast, you're well placed. The nearest airport is Heathrow, about 45 minutes by car, while Gatwick's a little further but still doable. Local buses serve nearby villages and towns, and the town centre is walkable and full of character—so you don't need to rush.
Surrey as a county is a mix of tradition and modern life. It's got deep roots—old churches, rolling farmland, manor houses—and yet it feels fresh and full of life. There's space to breathe, but it never feels cut off. It's the kind of place where you'll find farmers' markets one day, art festivals the next, and always a good country pub within reach. Whether you're raising a family, commuting to the city, or just want a quieter pace, Surrey tends to tick all the boxes.
