Godalming is a handsome market town tucked into the rolling hills of south-west Surrey, where the River Wey meanders through the centre and time seems to slow down just enough to let you breathe. With its cobbled lanes, timber-framed buildings and a high street that mixes the modern with the traditional, it's got bags of charm and an easygoing pace. It's the sort of place where you can grab a flat white, browse a few shops and be in open countryside within minutes—an ideal blend of town and country.
The town has a long and fascinating history, stretching right back to Saxon times. It grew steadily thanks to wool and cloth making, and by the 18th century it had become a thriving coaching stop on the London to Portsmouth route. One of its proudest claims is that it was the first town in the world to have a public electricity supply, lighting its streets in 1881. Godalming has retained much of its heritage, and you can still see echoes of its past in the old coaching inns and riverside mills. The population today sits at around 23,000, and while it's popular with commuters, there's a strong sense of community and local pride that's never far from the surface.
There's plenty to explore in and around town. Godalming Museum is a good place to start if you fancy learning a bit more about the area's history and some of its notable residents. The Phillips Memorial Park is perfect for a picnic or a quiet walk, and the high street is full of independent boutiques, bookshops and places to grab a decent bite. Not far from town you'll find National Trust favourites like Winkworth Arboretum, a sprawling collection of trees, plants and woodland walks that's especially stunning in autumn. Loseley Park, just outside Godalming, is a real gem too—an Elizabethan house set in gorgeous grounds that hosts everything from open-air cinema to local food festivals.
Wider Surrey has plenty to offer if you fancy venturing further afield. Head to Box Hill or Leith Hill for panoramic views and excellent walking trails, or explore the ruins of Waverley Abbey just down the road. Guildford is only a few miles away and brings with it historic charm, a castle with cracking views, and a buzzing riverside full of places to eat and shop. RHS Garden Wisley is great for plant lovers, and Denbies Wine Estate near Dorking is perfect for a lazy afternoon with a glass of something local. Whether you're after culture, countryside or just somewhere new to explore, you're spoilt for choice.
Godalming is well connected and easy to get to. The train station has regular services into London Waterloo, taking about 45 minutes, and you can also head south towards Portsmouth. The A3 runs nearby, giving you a quick route up to the M25 or down to the coast. Heathrow is just under an hour's drive away, and Gatwick's not much further. Local buses link up nearby towns and villages, and once you're in town, it's easy to get around on foot or by bike. The mix of countryside access and decent transport links makes Godalming a pretty ideal base.
Surrey itself is one of those counties that quietly delivers. It's full of surprises—ancient woodlands, historic estates, proper market towns and villages where the pub's still the beating heart of the community. While parts of it are firmly in the commuter belt, there's a huge amount of green space, heritage and character to be found. Whether you're after a stroll through a meadow, a pint in a 15th-century inn or a quick train into the city, it's all on the table here.
